Océ organizes sustainability awareness week for its employees
In its efforts to help protect and promote the environment, Océ is organizing a "Sustainability Week". The corporate campaign, which begins on 16 April and runs through 23 April 2009, provides Océ employees across the world with information about how each individual can have a positive impact on the environment by making small changes in their daily behaviors.
Océ encourages employees worldwide to use public transportation, carpool, bike or walk to work, recycle, and save energy. In addition, some Océ Operating Companies have combined Sustainability Week with activities to provide customers with information about how organizations can implement document management best practices that are eco-friendly and cost effective.
Examples of some of the Océ Sustainability Week activities include:
The Océ Sustainability Contest: employees can send in their ideas to make Océ more sustainable. The winning idea will be announced on World Environment Day, 5 June 2009.
Océ-Netherlands organizes a sustainability event, inspired by cradle-to-cradle, for customers and media on 17 April 2009.
Océ-UK starts a blog inviting employees to discuss and share ideas on sustainability topics and organizes a Go Green day on 17 April, where employees wear sustainable and green clothes. Employees are invited to make a donation for the local Wildlife Trusts, which the company will match pound for pound.
Océ-Italy publishes a 'Green' personnel magazine and serves a 'green' menu in its restaurant.
Océ-France serves 'sustainable' lunches in its restaurant and organizes a customer event later this year.
Océ-Spain features sustainable technology and recycles supplies as the main message at the Construmat exhibition in Barcelona from 20 April to 25 April 2009.
Océ-Technologies organizes a drawing competition for children of employees. The drawings will showcase the children's hopes for the planet with regard to protecting flora, fauna and culture.
Océ-North America publishes daily postings on the intranet. Each day will feature articles on various sustainability topics, Océ sustainability facts, and information regarding Océ's US Sustainability Council. On Wednesday 22 April, employees in selected offices can participate in a Jean's Day and a Green Day Festival for the promotion of sustainability awareness and to celebrate the week's events.
Océ Business Services offers 13 print/copy management practices that can help organizations benefit the environment and reduce costs. The practices, which are summarized in a poster that will be displayed at Océ Business Services' client sites, include the following:
- Print duplex
- Use recycled paper
- Print on workgroup instead of a desktop printer
- Pre-proof your document on screen
- Send print jobs to the mailbox
- Print multiple pages per page side
- Reduce your print to a smaller media size
- Make sure the printer's energy-saving mode is turned on
- Scan-and-mail instead of copy
- Use old prints as note or scratch paper
- Throw obsolete prints into the recycling bin
- Turn off document headers
- Buy paper and toner in bulk to save on transportation
These Sustainability Week activities are consistent with Océ's longstanding commitment to protecting and preserving the environment. Since the Seventies, Océ has proven its commitment to using recyclable materials and remanufacturing, revising and reconditioning its printing systems. Océ product development is geared towards helping customers operate in an ecologically sound way, so that the production of incorrect and unnecessary prints is minimized, as is energy consumption per print, as well as emissions of ozone, noise and toner; re-use of materials is maximized and the amount of non-reusable waste is reduced to a minimum.
